GLIMPSES WITHIN: Works by Julia Contacessi and Jane Schmidt

Sorelle Gallery is celebrating spring with a vibrant, cheerful exhibition entitled GLIMPSES WITHIN: Works by Julia Contacessi and Jane Schmidt. Join us on Friday, March 18th for an opening reception from 5:00 – 8:00pm. Beginning at 6:15pm, the artists will discuss their artistic inspiration and process. This special event is North-Carolina-native Jane Schmidt’s first pilgrimage to New Canaan.

Local artist Julia Contacessi’s abstract paintings evoke thoughts of seascapes and waterfalls. She says of her creative process: “…there is that moment when I layer on the paint just right – so that it dances in time and space…That’s when I have to catch my breath…My style is single-minded and focused on the simplicity of beauty in the moment.” Intuition and experience, entwined with Helen Frankenthaler’s philosophy of letting the “picture lead where it must go” imbue Contacessi’s jewel-toned, atmospheric artwork with distinctive elegance. 

Studded with upbeat, rhythmic color, Jane Schmidt’s abstracted landscape paintings “originate from inward and outward experiences of nature.” Schmidt states, “There is no right or wrong color. The artist and the viewer bring their own perceptions… I don’t try to influence my audience, but maybe open their eyes to new ways of perceiving it.” Schmidt’s color application is as varied as her canvas size. Whether on a foot-long panel or a 50 x 50 inch canvas, her paintings are both all-consuming and fully alive; soothing and silent – a profound depiction of the natural world.

Also as part of the show, a designer vignette will be on display. The work of co-owners Rebecca Baglio and Andrea Romeo of Romeo and Baglio Design, the vignette titled RUSTIC LUXE brings to life a stunning design for an entryway or any room to compliment that “statement piece” of art. RUSTIC LUXE is an uncommon take on a rustic console with hammered metal detail is juxtaposed with contemporary Lucite chairs and modern accessories. Featuring items from Schwartz Design Showroom.
